FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pharmaceutical companies are pushing many more candidate drugs into early stage trials, but will that be enough to cure the product drought? Proof-of-concept may be the answer.

Malorye A. Branca, Editor-in-Chief, reports on critical new trend
in the premier issue of Pharma DD

NEWTON, MA – May 24, 2006 – Like salmon racing upstream to spawn, drug candidates face many obstacles, and a huge number drop out before reaching the market. In its premier issue, Cambridge Healthtech Institute’s Pharma DD magazine (Pharmaceutical Discovery & Development) takes an in-depth look at the critical issue of how to get more good drugs through the pipeline and onto the market. The premier feature, entitled “Proof of Concept – Pharma’s New Watchword” describes how better tools and approaches may finally bridge discovery and clinical trials. The article includes interviews from leading pharma companies including Pfizer, Wyeth, and Novartis on the technologies and strategies that may allow them to predict a drug failure earlier in the development cycle, and ensure greater success among those that go on to clinical trials.

“Drug failure is the biggest problem for pharmaceutical companies today – it has become an industry-wide dilemma. Even the FDA has become involved in finding ways to improve the process,” says Malorye A Branca, who has covered the pharmaceutical industry for 15 years. “More and better “proof of concept” studies are how most companies are trying to fix that.” They are also doing different kinds of experiments, trying to nail down drug mechanisms before they even go into early human testing. There is now great emphasis on tools that can help bridge preclinical and clinical trial findings, providing greater certainty that drugs work in humans the same way they have acted in animal models.

The issue, being distributed this week at CHI’s World Pharmaceutical Congress in Philadelphia, PA, is also available on line at www.pharmaDD.com. In addition to delivering feature content, Pharma DD also includes:

  • Money Matters: The dollars and cents of the pharma industry
  • Perspectives: Insightful commentary and controversial views on strategy
  • Clinical Connection: Trends and new developments in clinical trials
  • Hot Targets: An in-depth look at front runners against leading drug targets
